چکیده

The Nike KrF laser, with its very uniform focal distributions, has been used at intensities near 1014 W/cm2 to launch shock waves in polystyrene targets. The rear surface visible light emission differed between clear CH targets and targets with a thin (125 nm) Al coating on the rear side. The uncoated CH targets showed a relatively slowly rising emission followed by a sudden fall when the shock emerges, while the Al-coated targets showed a rapid rise in emission when the shock emerges followed by a slower fall -allowing an unambiguous determination of the time the shock arrived at the rear surface. A half-aluminized target allowed us to observe this difference in a single shot. The brightness temperature of both the aluminized targets and the non-aluminized targets were slightly below but close to rear surface temperature predictions of a hydrodynamic code. A discussion of preheat effects is given. PACS: 52.50.Lp; 62.50+p; 52.50Jm; 52.70.Kz

Multimode Emissions from MEH-PPV Blended with Polystyrene Film Waveguides

In the context of conjugated polymers, especially those of the poly (phenylenevinylene) (PPV) family, which are promising candidates as emission material in light emitting devices such as LEDs, field effect transistors and photovoltaic devices, we have, in the present study, prepared MEH-PPV [Poly [2- methoxy-5-(2’-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylen-evinylene] of low molecular weight and low polydisp...

Spectral analysis of the acoustic emission of laser-produced plasmas.

A Q-switched frequency Nd:YAG laser was focused on copper, aluminum, and lead targets. The acoustic emission accompanying plasma formation was acquired and analyzed in both the time and the frequency domains. Spectral analysis of the shock wave has proved to be a simple and low-cost diagnostic of plasma phenomena. In the time domain, several propagation mechanisms of the shock wave were observe...

Hot Electron and X-ray Production from Intense Laser Irradiation of Wavelength-Scale Polystyrene Spheres

Hot electron and x-ray production from solid targets coated with polystyrene-spheres which are irradiated with high-contrast, 100 fs, 400 nm light pulses at intensity up to 2 1017 W/cm2 have been studied. The peak hard x-ray signal from uncoated fused silica targets is an order of magnitude smaller than the signal from targets coated with submicron sized spheres. The temperature of the x-rays i...

White light emission from polystyrene under pulsed ultra violet laser irradiation

This paper reports for the first time the luminescent property of polystyrene (PS), produced by pulsed ultra violet laser irradiation. We have discovered that, in air, ultra-violet (UV) irradiated PS nanospheres emit bright white light with the dominant peak at 510 nm, while in vacuum they emit in the near-blue region. From the comparison of PS nanospheres irradiated in vacuum and air, we sugge...

Micron-scale fast electron filaments and recirculation determined from rear-side optical emission in high-intensity laser–solid interactions

The transport of relativistic electrons generated in the interaction of petawatt class lasers with solid targets has been studied through measurements of the second harmonic optical emission from their rear surface. The high degree of polarization of the emission indicates that it is predominantly optical transition 11 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. New Journal of Physic...
